The past month was a roller-coaster ride for many US stocks and, naturally, the exchange traded funds (ETFs) that track them. The month started with record highs. However, with the new COVID-19 Omicron variant, lockdown worries have resurfaced, triggering a steep sell-off since Thanksgiving.

Some sectors, like oil, energy and travel, saw heavier losses than others.

Then, on Nov. 29, most stocks rebounded. But as we write, Nov. 30 is proving to be a different day, with major averages all highly volatile. Meanwhile, in the past week, the VIX index, regarded as the fear gauge shot up, and currently hovers around 25.

Today, we review exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that were either clear winners or losers in November. Our list offers just a glimpse on the funds’ monthly performances and excludes leveraged and inverse ETFs.

Several of these funds could inspire investors to put together long-term diversified portfolios within their risk/return parameters. We've covered a large number of these funds previously, and we plan to discuss others in the future.

3 ETFs Following The Major US Indices

Before we move on to best- and worst-performing ETFs, let's take a look at funds that provide exposure to three bellwether US indices—the Dow Jones, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ 100.

These three ETFs continue to offer steady year-to-date returns, despite short-term volatility.

SPDR® Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (NYSE:DIA), which tracks the Dow Jones: down 2.1% in November but up 14.6% YTD.

SPDR® S&P 500 (NYSE:SPY), which tracks the S&P 500: Up 1.0% in November and up 24.1% YTD.

Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ), which tracks the NASDAQ 100: up 3.3% in November and up 27.2% YTD.
