Chain Store Sales measures monthly sales volumes at the largest retail chain stores. The data has a bigger impact during the holiday season, a period which accounts for roughly a quarter of total annual revenue for the retail industry. During the rest of the year, the release is valued as an early indication of consumer spending.

A higher than expected reading should be taken as positive/bullish for the USD, while a lower than expected reading should be taken as negative/bearish for the USD.
